Edited by: Lhyda Souljacker on 06/09/2005 20:35:19 Hello all,
I live about 50 miles west of New Orleans (Thibodaux) and rode out the storm with little damage. My family the majority of whom live in the NO metro evacuated ahead of the storm, as they had the means to. My father, a doctor and department head at Children's Hospital, stayed behind to man his post.
Children's finally self-evacuted on wednesday night and I finally heard from him on fiday. The stories he has told me are harrowing: he drew a gun on would be looters three times. The reports of National Guard and NOPD members looting are true; he saw it several times.
More shockingly, the Fedral and State government has been very little help down there, and the local athorities are vastly overwhelmed. At the moment, it seems like the only people with their heads together are the militarty, private contractors, and the non-profit organizations.
Anyway, I just got internet back at work, and I wanted to see what this community (as I consider you peers) was saying about the Katrina Disaster. Most of it is helpful and promising, but I have a request of CCP:
Please post a link to Red Cross donations on the main site like you did with the tsunami.
New Orleans may not be as poor as Indonesia, but there are some parts of it are close. There were so many people at the begining of this that had barely anything, and now have nothing. They need all the goodwill they can get.
The "people" you see looting are a tribe of lawless sub-humans. This is not a racial issue, this is one of those broad reaching humanity issues.
Everyone else who lives in an urban area in the United States and elsewhere should consider what their town would look like if a major natural, economic, military, or otherwise disaster occured and ignighted long smouldering fires.
I have some hasty personal comments about New Orleans, and I will be attempting to start up my own little fundraiser at my own website www.pouldeau.com.
Thanks all, Soul(Jack)er
